As we all know the economy has been horrible for the past several years. While the recession technically ended a few quarters ago, many people are still in a horrible financial position and would argue with you that the economy is still in a recession. While there is a technical definition of what is a recession and what is a depression, I am often reminded of what my college economics professor taught, “A recession is when your brother-in-law loses his job. A depression is when you lose your job.” While this is technically not the proper terminology it is really true.

The Federal Government commissioned the U.S. Bureau of Labor to monitor past employment, current employment, and projected future employment. Their recent indications state that there is expected to be an increase in 1.1% of new lawyers joining the workforce each year for the next decade. The prior two years saw similar gains as well. This is important to note because the average income of an attorney is significantly higher than an average worker. The more money that is in the economy in general helps other areas of the economy grow as well. Here is the logic behind that, a law firm that is growing and hiring on more lawyers will need to buy more computers, more telephones, need more office space, more desks, more printers, on and on. So while you may not care that an attorney is making good money, they will also have more money to spend on other services such as buying a new car from the local dealership, going out to dinner more often, on and on. These things all help in growing an economy.

I realize that lawyers do not always have the best name and in some cases this is much deserved. However if you have been injured in a car accident and need to hire a personal injury attorney, please interview several attorneys and find the one that you feel comfortable with. Ask as many questions as you can. Find out what their policy is about returning phone calls and emails. How long have they been practicing? Look on the internet at any reviews that may have been posted on Google from former clients.
